  • Duration: 2 Days (approx.)
  • Location: OATLANDS, Tasmania

This two-day course will run participants through the theory and practice of a basic survey of an archaeological site. Participants will be taken through the basics of archaeology from desktop research to locate a site, use of historical sources to predict the archaeological resource, posing a set of research questions through to non-invasive site survey. This will lead to the assessment of archaeological potential and significance, through to the actual practical in-field survey and recording of sites. No prior experience is necessary, and no excavation will be undertaken in this course. Courses will include surveying an archaeological site, and can be adapted to a specific group’s particular interest (if numbers are sufficient).  This course will undertake a survey of the very significant 1840s Lovely Banks Probation Station site in the Southern Midlands.

The course is delivered by Brad Williams who has over 10 years experience working as a historical archaeologist in Tasmania. Brad has undertaken a number of major archaeological projects in Tasmania, from survey, planning and excavation and is the former archaeological representative of the Tasmanian Heritage Council.
