  • Duration: 2 Days (approx.)
  • Location: OATLANDS, Tasmania

This course will cover the theory behind traditional plastering, including materials selection, preparation and application methodology - with a focus on the use of traditional lime products. The course will detail diagnostic techniques to get to the cause of plaster failure and walk participants through the planning of restoration work (with a focus on the principles of the ICOMOS Burra Charter). A focus will also be on the stabilisation of near-failing plaster as a means of demonstrating that sometimes a minimal approach can lead to the best outcomes. The course will include a practical component in a Victorian Shop building at Oatlands, where restoration work to a failed lathe-and-plaster ceiling and solid wall plastering will be undertaken.

This two-day course is led by Darren Woodley, a fourth-generation traditional plasterer with over 25 years’ experience in restoration work. Assistance and conservation theory will be provided by Brad Williams who has extensive experience in conservation project planning and management.
